Finding local SEND support groups
Parenting a child with SEND can be isolating. Other parents don't always understand why your child behaves differently, why you can't just 'go to that birthday party', or why school mornings involve an hour-long negotiation. Local support groups connect you with families who get it — without having to explain or justify.
What they do
SEND support groups vary enormously. Some are informal coffee mornings where parents share experiences and tips. Others run structured workshops on topics like understanding EHCPs, managing anxiety, or navigating school meetings. Many also organise social events specifically designed for children with additional needs — where the whole family can relax without worrying about judgement.
When to seek help
There's no wrong time to join a support group. Many parents wish they'd found one earlier. Whether you're waiting for a diagnosis, fighting for provision, managing daily challenges, or simply want to meet other families who understand, a support group can provide both practical advice and emotional support. The parents you meet there have usually been through what you're facing now.
What to expect
Most groups meet monthly, either in person at community centres or online. Many are free, funded by charities or Local Authorities. You don't need a diagnosis to attend — all families are welcome. Some groups focus on specific conditions (autism, ADHD, Down syndrome) while others are open to all SEND families. The first visit can feel daunting, but most parents find the welcome is warm.
Typical costs
The majority of parent support groups are free. Some may ask for a small donation (£2 to £3) to cover venue hire and refreshments. Charity-run groups are almost always free. Check your Local Authority's Local Offer website for a list of groups in your area — it's a good starting point.
